BACKGROUND
Aran Tanis' history is filled with mixed emotions, and far-reaching events. She was born in 2307, on Romulus to Romulan Fleet Commander Alric, and his wife, T'Shiel; an agent with the Tal Shiar branch of Romulan Intelligence. All things considered, her first three years of life, at least, could be categorized as very normal for a Romulan girl. Her father enrolled her in the best of private schools at the age of three, and she began the normal indoctrination into Romulan society.
Unbeknownst to Commander Aldric, however, Tanis' mother had been operating as a double agent; working with both Federation Intelligence and the "Romulan Gestapo". Just before Tanis' fourth birthday, T'Shiel was found out, and the Tal Shiar put out a contract on her life when she dropped from view. The family home was sabotaged, and an explosion soon took the life of a respected Romulan... Commander Aldric. Thought meant for T'Shiel, Aldric activated the food replication unit that had been sabotaged, and was killed instantly.
T'Shiel, in hiding at the time, reimerged to basicly abduct her young daughter from Aldric's parents, and she fled the planet; making for Bajor, where she had several friends. During her time working with the Federation, T'Shiel had spent a great deal of time in the monasteries on Bajor, finding inner peace; and love in the arms of a Vedek named Aran. He had taught her a different life from that of the Romulan Government. and she had taught him to love openly, and passionately.
It was to Aran that T'Shiel fled with her child. She found sanctuary on Bajor, in Aran's Abbey. They shared their lives together for two years, and Aran began to educate young Tanis as a Bajoran. He and T'Shiel were even married according to Bajoran law and custom, and Tanis became the Vedek's daughter. But the Tal Shiar soon interceded in their usual, and brutal way, and disrupted the blissful life of Aran T'Shiel once again.
Tanis' mother was murdered before her young eyes, but the Vedek arrived with Bajoran Police before the agents could make off with the child. To avoid a public legal scandal, and possible conflict with the Federation, the Tal Shiar elected to declare the matter closed, and list Aran Tanis as "legally dead" rather than pursue the matter further, causing their agents to face trial for murder on Bajor.
So, though her mother was gone, Tanis was allowed a childhood of happiness; with Vedek Aran. He raised her as a Bajoran, teaching her, at the same time, all he could about her homeworld, saying "One should always know from whence they came". Tanis grew up, almost quickly, it seemed to the Vedek; into a tall, strong, lovely young woman. A resplendant figure, with flowing black hair, and her Romulan ears adorned with the traditional Bajoran earring. She also developed, as well as an exceptional beauty, a talent for science and things scientific. To this end, and with the Vedek's blessing, she enrolled in the Vulcan Science Academy; and began her life on her own.
All in all, she spent 9 years studying at the Vulcan Academy. During these years she earned the Vulcan equivalent of a Master's Degree in Quantum Physics, a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Biology and Xenobiology, and an Associates Degree in Archeology. She also studied Linguistics, and Social Sciences. During her time at the Vulcan school, she met several fellow students who were planning to go on into Starfleet, for the Federation, after graduation; knowing that a graduate of the Vulcan academy always got accepted to Starfleet Academy, and usually got a very good posting after graduation.
Tanis' mind was set. In the back of her memory she could remember her mother mentioning the Federation. The Vedek had mentioned it to her several times. She felt that was where her destiny lay. Upon graduationg on Vulcan she moved to Earth, and applied to the Academy. At first her Romulan heritage caused her to be rejected, but after proving she had been raised on Bajor, and procuring a letter of vouching from both Vedek Aran, and the Dean of the Vulcan Academy, she was allowed in.
She studied for the standard four years, plus an aditional year of advanced Command and Tactical training. Her first assignment was as a Graduate Instructor with the Academy. Next she was sent to the USS Axelrod, as a Science Officer. For the next 15 years she served as a science officer on the Axelrod, and the USS Carpathia, rising slowly but surely in rank to a full Lieutenant. She served well, and loyaly, and recieved several decorations in the line of duty.
Finaly, in 2361, Tanis was posted to the USS Adratic as Chief Science Officer. Aboard the Adratic she rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, and held the position of Second Officer despite StarFleet's objections to a Romulan sitting in command of a Federation Starship. Tanis had proven herself, and was in line for a command of her own in time, given her exemplary record.
Next she was posted to the USS Olympic, as Chief Science Officer under Captain Nathan Coster. during a battle with a Breen Warship, Coster was killed, and the First Officer, a Vulcan named Tyvek took command. When the battered ship returned to port, Tyvek was given command, and promoted, and he immediately chose Aran Tanis as his own Executive Officer. Her promotion to Full Commander came soon after.
She served 4 months in this position before Tyvek was also killed in the line of duty, this time in an explosion in a shuttle bay caused by an unstable Duridium shipment the vessel was carrying at the time. But Tanis was passed over for command. She instead continued on as First Officer to the new CO, Captain Erskine W. Huron.
Huron had recently been reactivated for active duty, after a series of psychological tests and exams, which still remain classified. Within a month of his taking command of the Olympic, he went on silent running, taking the ship, and her crew into Klingon territory, and attacking Klingon ships, and outposts. Most of the crew, handpicked by Huron when he took command, were loyal to him, and his cause, driven by a grudge against events in his childhood during the Federation-Klingon wars.
But not Aran Tanis. She kept her temper in check, and fought her loyalty to StarFleet, as she watched Huron massacre colony after colony filled with Klingon warriors. But when Huron turned his attention to a Klingon civilian outpost, she decided to step in. As part of an away team to the surface during the battle instigated by Marines under Huron's orders, Tanis witnessed a horror that pushed her to her limit. Huron's Chief of Security had taken prisoner two Klingon infants. Huron ordered them killed on the spot, saying "Nits grow into lice, kill 'em.".
Tanis witnessed this, and steped in. She struck Huron full in the face, knocking him out, and turned her rifle, thus far unfired, on the stunned security officer. "I'm in command now, clear our people out of here." she ordered.
"But you can't take command like that. That's mutiny!" bellowed the security chief.
"The captain isn't fit for command. He's incapacitated." replied Tanis.
"Yeah, you just knocked him out!"
"Exactly," said the lovely Romulan, "You can't command when you're unconcious. move us out, Mister!"
Of course, when Huron came too himself, Tanis was immediately arrested and held for Mutiny. Huron took the Olympic to the nearest StarBase, and immediately had Tanis put on trial. But his kangaroo court backfired, as a young officer named Carter came forward, and reported Huron's actions in the field. Soon several others, especially officers who had served under Tyvek, and Captain Coster, came to Tanis' defense. Huron's reasons for his silent running were exposed, he was relieved of command, and sent to a Federation mental insitution on Betazed.
Tanis, however, was found guilty of insubordination, and, with this on her record, she was transfered to the Academy as an instructor. She spent two years in this position, before things started to brighten in what seemed to suddenly grind down to a dead end career. A review of the case had been ordered by Admiral McArdle, after Huron killed himself in the institution, and Tanis was returned to active duty, and given a promotion, perhaps as a way of StarFleet trying to apologise to her for "dry docking" her career.
Now a Captain, she was given command of the USS Runic, and Oberth-class ship. Four months into her command, the ship was hit, in the Giles Belt, by a Dominion attack, and severely damaged. She floated as a deralict for 2 hours and 15 minutes, with life support failing, and radiation leaks all over the ship. Soon Aran Tanis and another crewmember were all that survived. Tanis sent one last distress signal, and slipped into unconciousness.
She woke up in the sickbay of the USS Challenger, her ship having finally exploded due to a warp-core breach. Her recovery was quick, due to her Romulan metabolism, and, as the Challenger was in the middle of a mission, and without a First Officer on deck, she assumed the duties under Commodore Whitehurst.
Being familiar with her record, and her history, Whitehurst took an immediate liking to her, and offered her the position of First Officer full time, which Tanis, having just lost her first command, felt it prudent to accept.
It wasn't long after she assumed the postition of Executive Officer that the "Heartbeat away" road to command came to Tanis' door in literal irony. Commodore Whitehurst, after suffering a heart attack, relieved himself from duty, and placed Captain Aran in command of the USS Challenger.
But her command of the Pasquinel Class cruiser was short-lived, lasting only long enough to get the vessel back to Deep Space Nine and turn it over to another officer; Captain Elizabeth St. John. Starfleet Command denied Whitehurst his retirement, and instead reassigned him as Sector Commander over the area dominated by the Giles Belt. He was take up office at the newly comissioned Starbase 211. Wanting an officer he knew he could trust to command the base during his tenure as Sector Commander, Whitehurst immediately chose Captain Aran.
PROFILE
Aran Tanis is a strong, and bold woman. But she is also gentle and compassionate. She has deep emotions, and the passions of a Romulan, including the famous Romulan temper. Only her Bajoran teachings keep her calm in times of high stress, and she often draws on them as a great source of strength.
She is acceptionally intelligent, and has an uncanny knack for science and things scientific. But she is also very apreciative of the arts, and enjoys her leisure time, which she usually spends visiting the various worlds she feels she'll never get a chance to see in "waking life", such as her homeworld of Romulus.
Tanis is tall and beautiful, with lovely blue eyes, and regal Romulan features. She has a muscular, yet very shapely figure, and a soft voice, almost husky, and tinged with a hint of accent, probably from the mastering of the languages she's studied, that could almost sound Terran-French. As a testament to her Bajoran upbringing she always wears the traditional Bajoran earring.
A private person, it takes Tanis a while to make friends, and even longer to become "involved" romanticly. As a matter of fact, she has only had two relationships in her past, and both of them ended in the deaths of her lovers, so she is loth to give in to love a third time. however, once Aran Tanis decides she is your friend, she is your friend for life, and she will stick by your side through thick and thin, the long and the short of it, loyally.
Aran Tanis has experienced a great deal in her life. She is currently in her early 80s, though with her Romulan lifespan, she appears at around 40 years on the Terran scale. Her experiences, triumphs, and mistakes, she always takes into measure, and she tries to do the best she can from this wealth of information. Her loyalty to StarFleet as a whole is unswerving, but she will go as far, as exemplified by her dealings with Captain Huron, as mutiny for the good of her ship, and those who serve under her.
The third officer to serve as "Exec" on board the Challenger, Whitehurst considers her a blessing, and often trusts her with the full duties of command. Being close to the standard age of retirement from active duty, Whitehurst is actually "grooming" Tanis for command of the ship, ready and willing to turn the center seat over to her upon his retirement.
And, much to Tanis' surprise, that retirement came almost as soon as she was situated to the First Officer's seat. After suffering a major heart attack, the aging Commodore turned his command over to Tanis, relieving himself of duty. When the Commodore's retirement was denied him, however, and he was given a desk-job at Starbase 211, he immediately requested Tanis to take the position as Post Commander.
